De Verenigde Staten sturen 1.400 extra militairen naar Afghanistan.
De extra manschappen zijn nodig om extra druk uit te oefenen op de Taliban, zegt minister van Defensie Robert Gates. De militairen vertrekken over enkele weken.
Er bevinden zich nu al meer dan 100.000 Amerikaanse soldaten in Afghanistan.
