Het is nog niet duidelijk hoe de twee schepen met elkaar konden botsen. Hulpdiensten hebben wel al een drijvende versperring van bijna 1,2 km gelegd om te voorkomen dat de olie zich te ver verspreidt.
Bij het incident raakte niemand gewond. De schepen werden wel nog niet uit elkaar getrokken uit vrees voor een explosie.
