De ruïne, die op de werelderfgoedlijst van de Unesco staat, ligt op meer dan 2.400 meter hoogte in de buurt van de stad Cuzco en is per bus of per trein bereikbaar. De treindienst is sinds zondag opgeschort. De Peruaanse luchtmacht zal de toeristen nu evacueren met helikopters.
Bij het noodweer in Peru zijn tot dusver 2 mensen omgekomen.
