Met het sms-ticket, dat voorlopig alleen beschikbaar is via Proximus, wil De Lijn haar reizigers een goedkoper alternatief bieden voor een biljet bij de chauffeur en stipter kunnen rijden.
De Lijn onderhandelt met de gsm-operatoren Base en Mobistar over een uitbreiding van het systeem. Vlaams minister van Mobiliteit Hilde Crevits (CD&V) zei in april dat ze verwacht dat Base en Mobistar nog dit jaar zullen instappen in het sms-ticketingsysteem.
