Het voertuig vatte in de nacht van maandag op dinsdag omstreeks 1.15 uur vuur ter hoogte van kilometerpaal 81.2, in de richting van Antwerpen.
De brandweer van Waasmunster snelde ter plaatse, maar kon niet voorkomen dat de auto volledig uitbrandde.
