Waarom de Black Hawk net in problemen kwam, is nog niet geweten. Wel was het donker op het moment van de crash en regende het hard.
De helikopter crashte niet ver van de A67-snelweg. Meteen na het ongeluk brandde het toestel uit.
De Black Hawk moest wellicht landen op de nabijgelegen Amerikaanse luchtmachtbasis.
