Het stuk ijs is 260 vierkante kilometer groot. Dat is vier keer zo groot als het New Yorkse stadsdeel Manhattan. De ijsschots drijft nu tussen Groenland en Canada. De ijskolos zal vermoedelijk op kleinere eilandjes botsen en in stukken breken.
Het is de eerste keer sinds 1962 dat zo'n groot stuk ijs afbrak in het noordpoolgebied.
