In totaal kon Schmitt 263 stemmen verzamelen. Dat is meer dan de vereiste tweederdemeerderheid. 59 leden van het parlement gaven hun stem aan de socialistische Andras Balogh.
Schmitt volgt Lazlo Solyom op. Vanaf 5 augustus zal de man 5 jaar lang het presidentschap op zich nemen.
