De Verenigde Naties heeft 18 juli uitgeroepen tot de 'Internationale dag van Nelson Mandela'. Volgens secretaris-generaal Ban Ki-Moon dient deze dag "om Mandela te eren en zijn verwezenlijkingen rond een niet-raciaal, niet-seksistisch en democratisch Zuid-Afrika te vieren".
