Het 58-jarige kopstuk van de Napolitaanse Camorra was al sinds 2003 voortvluchtig. Hij was veroordeeld tot een celstraf van 15 jaar wegens drugshandel en stond daardoor zelfs op de lijst van honderd meest gezochte gangsters van Italië.
"De arrestatie van Vittorio Pirozzi is opnieuw een groot succes van de staat in de strijd tegen de Camorra", verklaarde Maroni na de aanhouding.
