Kardinaal Julien Ries is zaterdag op 93-jarige leeftijd overleden. De godsdiensthistoricus uit Aarlen werd vorig jaar nog door paus Benedictus XVI tot kardinaal benoemd vanwege zijn verdiensten voor de Katholieke Kerk.
België telt nu nog maar één kardinaal: voormalig aartsbisschop Godfried Danneels.
