Het drama speelde zich af op de Discovery Middle School in Madison, in de Amerikaanse staat Alabama. Het slachtoffer werd in kritieke toestand overgebracht naar het ziekenhuis in Huntsville. Hulpverleners probeerden de tiener nog te reanimeren, maar hulp kon niet meer baten.
De directeur van de school op Hughes Road bevestigt dat een van zijn leerlingen werd neergeschoten.
Burgemeester Paul Finley kwam ter plaatse.
