Het lijk werd rond 13 uur opgemerkt, drijvend tussen de boten die er liggen aangemeerd. De brandweer van Nieuwpoort heeft het levenloze lichaam van de man uit het water gehaald.
Het parket van Veurne onderzoekt hoe de man in het water terechtkwam. Wellicht werd de man onwel en sloeg hij overboord. Voorlopig gaat het parket niet uit van kwaad opzet.
