Australië is sinds 1901 onafhankelijk, maar behoort tot het Britse Gemenebest. Koningin Elizabeth II is nog steeds formeel staatshoofd. In 1999 hebben de Australiërs zich in een referendum uitgesproken tegen de republiek. De kwestie verdeelt het land sindsdien.
