Het slachtoffer is Mahmud al-Mabhuh. Hij was een van de drijvende krachten achter de oprichting van de militaire tak van Hamas, de Issedin-al-Qassam-brigades.
Hoe al-Mabhuh net gedood werd op 20 januari, is niet bekend. Zijn lichaam werd donderdag gerepatrieerd naar de Syrische hoofdstad Damascus.
Israël heeft nog niet gereageerd op de beschuldiging. Wel beschouwt het land al-Mabhuh als de spilfiguur achter de ontvoering en moord op twee Israëlische soldaten in 1989.
