Maes begon haar nationale
politieke carrière in 1971 bij de VU
als federaal volksvertegenwoordiger.
Daarna zat ze in de Senaat en
ook in het Vlaams Parlement.
Maes
was ook Europarlementslid. Bij het
uiteenvallen van de VU koos Maes
voor Spirit. Bij de jongste parlementsverkiezingen
stond ze op de
Europese lijst van SLP.
