Het toestel moest de radioactiviteit boven de door de aardbeving en tsunami beschadigde kerncentrale meten. Volgens Tepco richtte het vliegtuigje, een 7,7 kilo zware T-Hawk van het Amerikaanse bedrijf Honeywell, geen schade aan. Hier een voorbeeldvideo van zo'n T-Hawk:
