In India zijn er al een duizendtal mensen omgekomen tijdens verschillende overstromingen en aardverschuivingen. Dat melden lokale hulpverleners.
"Volgens de officiële informatie waarover wij beschikken, gaat het om ongeveer duizend slachtoffers", aldus Yashpal Arya, bevoegd minister voor rampenbestrijding in de deelstaat Uttarakhand. Die staat werd het hardst getroffen sinds het noodweer losbrak op 15 juni jongstleden.
Ongeveer 8.000 mensen wachten nog steeds op hulp.
