De openingsceremonie gaat door op 12 februari. In plaats van Obama zelf zal vicepresident Joe Biden present zijn.
Het is niet duidelijk waarom de Amerikaanse president niet komt opdagen. Naar alle waarschijnlijkheid zal hij ook de sluitingsceremonie op 28 februari missen.
Janet Napolitano, Amerikaans minister voor Binnenlandse Veiligheid, zal de Amerikaanse regering dan vertegenwoordigen.
