De Domus Aurea ligt op de Palatijnheuvel in het centrum van de stad, vlak bij het Colosseum. Keizer Nero liet het paleis halverwege de eerste eeuw na Christus bouwen
.
In de jaren 1980 werd de Domus Aurea na een aardbeving een tijd gesloten voor het publiek. Maar ook na de restauratiewerken kwamen er nog regelmatig brokstukken naar beneden.
