Albert Vilalta en Roque Pascual werden op 29 november 2009 ontvoerd toen ze meereden met een hulpkonvooi in het noorden van Mali. De Noord-Afrikaanse tak van Al-Qaeda ontvoerde ook een Spaanse vrouw, maar die werd in maart vrijgelaten.
