Rond de middag werd er geschoten en deden er zich explosies voor in de hoofdstad Niamey, waar ook het presidentieel paleis staat. De soldaten verschaften zich toegang tot het paleis, waar ze president Tandja en diens kabinet gijzelen.
Tandja kwam in 1999 zelf door een staatsgreep aan de macht.
