De douaniers vonden de slagtanden in containers in de Noord-Vietnamese haven van Haiphong. Het ivoor lag onder gedroogd zeewier en zat in plastic zakken.
De handel in ivoor werd in 1989 grotendeels verboden, maar sinds 2005 is de illegale trafiek serieus toegenomen. Vooral Aziatische misdaadorganisaties importeren de slagtanden uit Oost-Afrika.
