Rond 13 uur vatte het voertuig vuur. De chauffeur kon de lichte vrachtwagen nog op de pechstrook zetten, op de boogbrug over het Netekanaal.
Door de vlammen raakte echter ook de metalen brug oververhit. De brandweer moest de brug koelen en sloot de snelweg een tijdlang af. Er ontstond een kilometerslange file.
