Het ongeval gebeurde om 19.50 uur ter hoogte van de brug over het kanaal Dessel-Kwaadmechelen. Een auto reed er in de afdaling van de brug rechtdoor in een bocht. De wagen reed de talud af en kwam enkele meters lager tot stilstand tegen een boom.
Voor de bestuurster kwam alle hulp te laat. Ze overleed ter plaatse.
