De nieuwe paus zal gewoon "paus Franciscus" genoemd worden, en dus niet "Franciscus de eerste". Het aanhangsel I komt er pas wanneer er ook sprake is van een Franciscus II, zo zet de woordvoerder van het Vaticaan woensdagavond de puntjes op de i.
De nieuwe paus Franciscus is een man van veel "eersten". De eerste paus van het Amerikaanse continent, de eerste jezuïet en de eerste met de naam Franciscus. Op Johannes Paulus I na, is hij ook de eerste die een nieuwe naam kiest sinds 913. Maar voorlopig is het dus niet nodig hem steeds Franciscus "de eerste" te noemen.
