Indierockband Alt-J, die dit jaar nog op Pukkelpop stond, heeft gisteren de prestigieuze Mercury Prize in de wacht kunnen slepen. De debuutplaat 'An Awesome Wave' werd uitgeroepen tot beste album van het jaar.
De vierkoppige band uit Leeds was één van de grootste kanshebbers en moest het opnemen tegen o.a. Plan B, The Maccabees, Richard Hawley, Django Django, Jessie Ware en Field Music. Ook Michael Kiwanuka, Ben Howard, Lianne La Havas, Roller Trio en Sam Lee konden hun nominatie niet verzilveren.
De Mercury Prize - die zo'n 25.000 euro waard is - wordt jaarlijks uitgereikt aan de beste artiest uit het Verenigd Koninkrijk of Ierland. Vorig jaar mocht singer-songwriter PJ Harvey het beeldje mee naar huis nemen.
