Heel wat chefs plaatsten het gerechtje maar al te graag op de menukaart als 'Mao's Roodgekookte Varkensvlees', maar nu zal dat niet meer zo gemakkelijk kunnen.
Het recept voor het stoofpotje werd officieel vastgelegd door het Instituut Controle Voedselkwaliteit in de Chinese provincie Hunan. Zo mag er bijvoorbeeld enkel nog varkensvlees uit het district Ningxiang gebruikt worden.
Mao Zedong maakte van China een communistisch land. Hij overleed in 1976.
