Washington leende het boek 'The Law of Nations' op 5 oktober 1789 uit in de New Yorkse bibliotheek. Hij toonde zich geen brave klant, want hij vergat het boek terug te brengen.
Een maand geleden ontdekte de bibliotheek het verlies. Het boek werd teruggevonden in Mount Vernon. Dat is het (ondertussen toeristische) landgoed waar Washington destijds woonde.
Washington had in al die jaren een boete van maar liefst 240.000 euro verzameld, maar de bibliotheek besloot die kwijt te schelden.
