Het Vaticaan was in juli 2007 al gestart met de renovatie van de bibliotheek die in het najaar zal heropend worden. Bezoekers zullen dan kunnen werken met een elektonische catalogus.
De Vaticaanse bibliotheek werd in 1450 opgericht door paus Nicolas V.
