De Italiaan Alessandro Nesta trekt naar de Major League Soccer (MLS), de Noord-Amerikaanse voetbalcompetitie. De 36-jarige verdediger en ex-international heeft donderdag een contract getekend bij het Canadese Montreal Impact.
Nesta, die 78 keer uitkwam voor de Italiaanse nationale ploeg, is met Montreal slechts aan zijn derde club toe. Hij begon zijn carrière in 1993 bij Lazio Rome en verkaste in 2002 naar AC Milan. Zijn met blessures doorweven carrière kende hoogtepunten met de wereldtitel in 2006, waarna hij stopte als international, en de Champions League in 2003 en 2007.
"Ik ben heel blij om hier te zijn", aldus Nesta op de website van zijn nieuwe club. "Ondanks enkele aanbiedingen om mijn carrière voort te zetten in Europa, was ik op zoek naar een nieuwe uitdaging en wilde ik in de MLS spelen".
Bij Montreal wordt Nesta ploeggenoot van zijn landgenoten Marco Di Vaio en Bernardo Corradi.
