De Servische Ana Ivanovic (WTA 16) heeft zaterdag het WTA-toernooi in het Nieuw-Zeelandse Auckland (hard/250.000 dollar) op haar naam geschreven. In de finale versloeg ze de Amerikaanse veterane Venus Williams (WTA 47) in drie sets met 6-2, 5-7 en 6-4. De wedstrijd duurde 2 uur en 20 minuten.
Ivanovic, het tweede reekshoofd, had in de halve finales Kirsten Flipkens (WTA 20) uitgeschakeld.
Voor de 26-jarige Servische is het haar twaalfde WTA-toernooizege, haar eerste sinds november 2011 toen ze de B-Masters in Bali won.
De 33-jarige Williams blijft steken op 44 titels. Haar laatste toernooizege dateert van oktober 2012 toen ze de beste was in Luxemburg.
