Viktoria Azarenka (WTA-3) heeft haar eerste grandslamtitel beet. De 23-jarige Wit-Russische versloeg in de finale van de Australian Open de Russische Maria Sharapova (WTA-4) met indrukwekkend tennis en met duidelijke cijfers. Het werd 6-3, 6-0.
Azarenka, die in de halve finale Kim Clijsters uit het tornooi kegelde, verovert door haar winst in de finale eveneens de eerste plaats op de WTA-ranglijst.
