Ivan Basso won in 2006 de Ronde van Italië. Een paar maanden later dook zijn naam echter op in het dopingschandaal Operación Puerto. Hij werd voor twee jaar geschorst.
Dit jaar staat hij weer helemaal aan de top met opnieuw winst in de Giro. Basso brengt zijn Poolse ploegmaat Sylwester Szmyd mee naar de Kempen.
