Kimmer Coppejans (18) heeft zondag het juniorentornooi van Roland Garros op zijn naam geschreven. De Oostendenaar versloeg in de finale de Canadees Filip Peliwo met 6-1 en 6-4. De partij duurde 1 uur en 5 minuten.
Coppejans is het nummer 4 op de wereldranglijst bij de junioren en het zesde reekshoofd in Parijs. Peliwo staat zesde op de ranking en is het vijfde reekshoofd.
De West-Vlaming is nog maar de tweede Belgische junior die Roland Garros wint. Jacky Brichant ging hem in 1947 voor. Bij de meisjes won Justine Henin de titel in 1997.
De laatste Belg die een grandslamtoernooi bij de junioren kon winnen, was Ann-Sophie Mestach. Zij schreef in januari 2011 de Australian Open op haar palmares.
