In 2009 besloot BMW na een teleurstellend verlopen seizoen de stekker uit het Formule 1-team te trekken. Toch blijven de Duitsers autosport de manier bij uitstek vinden om hun naam en technologische kennis in de kijker te zetten.
In het DTM zal BMW het opnemen tegen andere Duitse kleppers als Audi en Mercedes. Of BMW ook actief blijft in het WTCC, is nog niet duidelijk.
