Tussen 1979 en 2007 werd de Dakar rally 29 keer op het Afrikaans continent gehouden. Maar de editie van 2008 kon niet doorgaan wegens veiligheidsproblemen. Sindsdien verhuisde het sportevenement naar Zuid-Amerika.
Dakar 2011 blijft in Zuid-Amerika
