Net zoals de Russische premier Vladimir Poetin Dick Advocaat weglokte naar Rusland, zo heeft de Marokkaanse koning Mohamed VI aangedrongen om Gerets naar Marokko te krijgen. Volgens HLN tekent 'De Leeuw' een contract voor vier jaar.
Voorlopig zit Gerets nog wel tot 2011 onder contract bij de Saoedische club Al Hilal. Het is dus nog niet duidelijk wanneer hij als Marokkaans bondscoach kan beginnen.
