Formule 1-rijder Fernando Alonso heeft de licentie van de Baskische wielerploeg Euskaltel Euskadi overgenomen. Dat bevestigt de 32-jarige Spanjaard maandag op zijn website.
Euskaltel Euskadi verkeert al een tijd in financiële problemen. Met tweevoudig wereldkampioen Alonso is er nu een principeakkoord om de WorldTour-licentie over te nemen, zo klinkt het.
Alonso, een groot wielerliefhebber, investeert naar verluidt zes miljoen euro in de wielerploeg. De hoofdzetel van het team zou verhuizen van Baskenland naar Asturië, vanwaar Alonso afkomstig is.
