Maes wordt beschouwd als de beste Belgische voetbalster. In 1996 vierde ze haar eerste cap. Op 26 november 2009 speelde ze haar laatste interland, waarin ze ook het beslissende doelpunt maakte.
In clubverband speelde Maes elf seizoenen voor Rapid Wezemaal. Achteraf kwam ze uit voor het Nederlandse Willem II en het Zweedse Djurgården. In 2009 ging ze aan de slag bij het Duitse Duisburg, waarmee ze de Uefa Cup won.
