Axel Witsel is in laatste instantie niet meegereisd naar Malaga, waar Zenit zijn eerste wedstrijd in de poules van de Champions League speelt. De Belg sukkelt met een hamstringblessure, en kan daarom vandaag niet zijn Europese debuut maken met Zenit.
Afgelopen vrijdag speelde Witsel wel nog zijn allereerste officiële wedstrijd voor de ploeg van Luciano Spalletti. Hij mocht invallen in de wedstrijd tegen Terek Grozny. Zenit verloor de match met 0-2.
