De medische staf van zijn ploeg raadde de man af om aan de Ronde van Vlaanderen deel te nemen.
"Dit is niet waar ik op gehoopt had", aldus de Noor. "Ik keek uit naar deze wedstrijd. Ik hoop alsnog klaar te geraken voor de start van Parijs-Roubaix want ook die wedstrijd staat hoog op mijn verlanglijst."
