Hanescu nam het vrijdag in de derde ronde op tegen de Duitser Daniel Brands. Hij kreeg het echter aan de stok met enkele toeschouwers. Hij spuwde naar hen en gaf daarna op.
Volgens het officiële rapport gaf Hanescu op wegens een beenblessure, maar de scheidsrechterscommissie gaat de zaak onderzoeken. "Iemand riep iets naar hem in de vijfde set. Hanescu richtte zich tot de supporters en spuwde in hun richting", liet een woordvoerder van het toernooi alvast weten.
