Het onderzoek wordt gevoerd door de Internationale Atletiekfederatie (IAAF), nadat er in augustus 2009 twijfels ontstonden toen Semenya een gouden medaille won op het WK atletiek in Berlijn.
Sinds het WK nam de atleet/atlete Semenya aan geen enkele wedstrijd meer deel.
