Xavier Malisse heeft zich geplaatst voor de kwartfinales van het ATP-tennistoernooi in Metz. Hij schakelde in de achtste finales de Rus Igor Kunitsyn (ATP 58) uit: 6-4 en 6-2.
Voor de West-Vlaming, 47ste op de wereldranglijst, is het pas de tweede zege sinds zijn uitschakeling op Wimbledon in juni.
De 31-jarige Malisse treft in kwartfinales de Oekraïner Alexandr Dolgopolov (ATP-20). Het derde reekshoofd was vrijgesteld in de eerste ronde en schakelde in de achtste finales de Cyprioot Marcos Baghdatis uit met 6-7 (5/7), 7-5 en 6-3.
De twee kennen elkaar al vrij goed: in maart wonnen ze als dubbelpartners het toernooi van Indian Wells.
