Geesink verwierf wereldwijd bekendheid toen hij in 1964 op de Olympische Spelen in Tokyo de gouden plak kon binnenhalen. Hij versloeg de Japanner Akio Kaminaga, één van de grote favorieten. In totaal zou Geesink 21 keer Europees kampioen worden.
Na zijn carrière als judoka, bleef hij actief in de sportwereld. Zo maakte Geesink sinds 1987 deel uit van het Internationaal Olympisch Comité.
