Donderdagmiddag is de olympische vlam voor de Spelen van Londen ontstoken. Dat gebeurde zoals de traditie het voorschrijft in het Griekse Olympia, waar de bakermat van de Olympische Spelen is gevestigd.
De vlam begint nu aan rondreis van zowat 3.000 km langs verschillende Griekse archeologische sites, om op 17 mei aan te komen in het Olympisch Stadion van Athene, het toneel van de eerste moderne Spelen in 1896. Daar zal de vlam aan de Britse delegatie worden doorgegeven.
De Olympische Spelen in Londen beginnen op 27 juli en eindigen op 12 augustus.
