Samaranch was dinsdag met hartproblemen opgenomen in het Quironziekenhuis in Barcelona. In 2007 had de Spanjaard ook al hartproblemen gekregen, in oktober vorig jaar kreeg hij een hartaanval.
Samaranch was tussen 1981 en 2001 IOC-voorzitter. Daarna werd hij opgevolgd door onze landgenoot Jacques Rogge. Samaranch was sindsdien erevoorzitter.
