De Wereldvoetbalbond FIFA heeft het WK 2018 toegewezen aan Rusland. Dat werd zonet bekendgemaakt op het hoofdkwartier in Zürich. België/Nederland, Spanje/Portugal en Engeland grijpen dus naast de organistie. In 2022 ontvangt Qatar de wereldbeker.
Voor 2022 vallen Australië, de Verenigde Staten en Japan/Zuid-Korea af.
