Driewielige auto's bestaan misschien al langer dan exemplaren met vier wielen. Toch werden ze altijd stiefmoederlijk behandeld, niet in het minst vanwege hun instabiele weggedrag. Ze worden onderverdeeld bij de *microcars* en vooral de Britten bleken bedreven in de driewielers. Op basis van zo'n Britse Reliant kwam er dan ook deze Bond Bug.
